Joshua Tree

Yucca brevifolia

Description:

Seen at a rest stop near Boron, CA (adjacent to Edwards Air Force Base). This guy was pretty big, so probably a couple hundred years old.

Habitat:

California high desert, but range extends to Utah, Nevada, and Arizona at altitudes between 400 and 1,800 m (1,300 and 5,900 feet).

Notes:

Environmentalists are concerned that if environmental temperatures increase, Joshua Trees may be squeezed out of some of their existing habitats and their range may be limited to cooler areas.
