This year these caterpillars seem to be having a population explosion. I have never seen this many in previous years. They are very numerous. They can cause rashes in some people if handled.

That's for sure Latimeria. A good rule is to never touch hairy or spiny caterpillars - not all of them are painful, but it's better not to find out the hard way.
