Western Spadefoot Toad

Spea hammondii

Habitat:

Chaparral, and tadpoles seen in vernal pools

Notes:

Found in a muddy large puddle near house. Extra rain this year created an adequate environment for toads to lay eggs here, although pool is drying up quickly. I pulled 100 or so out to raise in captivity, then I'll let them go.

Yes, quite a bit more rain this year which has produced a nice crop of wildflowers (and weeds). This has done a lot to help mitigate our drought here in southern CA.

I'm guessing it's one of those years like 1998 that you can walk out onto the Mojave desert without a hat and wearing a sweatshirt and see wildflowers rarely seen.
