Gorse

Ulex europaeus

Description:

Bright yellow flowers like those of Scotch broom, with long painful thorns.

Habitat:

Rocky cliffs and very sandy soil.

Notes:

Considered a pest on the Oregon coast, especially near Bandon. It makes a beautiful golden carpet when it blooms, and I got a new appreciation for it's good uses when I read the Wikipedia article. It thrives on the coast but doesn't seem to spread much inland.
