male cardinal

Cardinalis cardinalis

This male cardinal was hanging around the NC Zoo, no doubt enjoying his freedom and the food scraps tossed by visitors.

The cardinal's natural habitat is woodlands, gardens, shrub lands, and swamps. This bird is a permanent resident throughout its range, although it may relocate to avoid extreme weather or if food is scarce.
