Northern Muriqui

Brachyteles hypoxanthus

Description:

largest primate of the new world. one of the most endangered monkeys in the world

Habitat:

atlantic coast rainforest

Notes:

Also known as woolly spider monkeys. I spotted these rare primates at the remote Caratinga reserve. They have never been hunted in the reserve and felt comfortable with us underneath watching them. Their numbers have grown from a recorded 8 in the reserve in 1944 to over 300 in 2010.
