Locust Borer

Megacyllene robiniae

Description:

About one inch in length the locust borer has red legs and is otherwise yellow and black with a yellow "W" across the elytra (wing covers).

Habitat:

The larvae of this striking insect lives in the heartwood of tree twigs, especially locust trees, where they can cause significant damage to the tree. The adults are sometimes found on goldenrod blossoms, as this one was, although they don't need to feed as adults.
