Neomarica sp.
Three white petals with the three blue striped or variegated blue and brown petals and the three central white structures. Amazing plant and flower.
This blossoms in the dry season when you would think everything was on hold until the rain fell again. It came up in a shady area under French Pine trees and next to some shrubs.
Wonderful flower. It was regal in its beauty. Like a palace captured in a bloom.
Interesting thought p.young713. From the Wikipedia source, they are from the Southern Africa, Central and South America. If this is accurate the highest number of species is from Brazil. An adventurous family member or friend could have been collecting or on an Ocean voyage back when plants could be brought back in possibly for scientific studies or just collecting. Your plant does have striking similarities to the one I found. Interesting to ponder. As plant detectives we have only a few clues to work with.
Your welcome! I was also thinking about this plant, it is one of my favorites! What I think is interesting is your photo is taken in Madagascar, and this family had this plant in their family so many generations, they were an old Florida family, I wonder now if this plant originated in Madagascar and made its voyage here to Florida? I thought it was very cool that you spotted this plant, I also have a photo of the yellow walking Iris in my photos, the older woman gave to me, it is also a heritage plant.
Thanks, p.young for the story of the lady having them passed down since the 1920's. I was thinking about that today.
Thanks, Dan, for the ID, p.young for recognizing them, too and Emma for your arrangement suggestion:). I just managed to catch them in a thin window it appears of the 18 hour bloom time or there about.
JosephBullock.you should put the third picture first. The flowers are int he shape of a beautiful swan!!
Hi, I have some of these, they were given to me by an older lady who told me her mother passed it down to her from the 1920s. It is called an Iris. But only blooms 1x a year.
