I did have a hunch that it wasn't a fungi. That is really interesting, thanks for the info.
It's actually a plant, not a mushroom. It has no chlorophyll of its own, so it's myco-heterotrophic: it essentially parasitizes mushrooms, which have a relationship with trees where the mushroom gets nutrients from the tree. Indian pipes saps those nutrients from fungus.
