Pronghorn

Antilocapra americana

Description:

Adult males (shown) are about 5 feet long, weigh up to about 150 pounds and have curved horns with a "prong" or tine pointing forward. Females are similar, but somewhat smaller.

Habitat:

Rolling grasslands, especially where there is sagebrush, where it can use its blazing speed to escape predators.

Notes:

This is the fastest land mammal in North America and can run up to 60 miles/hour. It may be the second fastest land mammal in the world, second only to the cheetah. Interestingly, this high speed may be an evolutionary result of adapting to an extinct predator, the American cheetah.
