Pie-dish Beetle -2

Pterohelaeus peltatus

Description:

This dusty blue beetle was about 13 mm long. The dorso-ventrally flattened body had a flange around both the thorax and elytra.

Habitat:

Spotted under bright lights in a suburban garden.

Notes:

Pie-dish beetle have fused elytra. Pterohelaeus are said to have a bluish colouring as opposed to Helae sp which are mostly black. They live under wood and leaf debris and feed on decaying material.
They can sometimes damage plants by biting stems close to the ground causing the plant to wither.
