Tamias striatus
This little chipmunk nearly broke my heart. I found it in the woods yesterday - it was so tiny (~6 cm long /2 inches). It's head and body seemed deformed, and it had a big gash on its neck. I'm guessing it was born deformed and then got attacked? I'm also wondering if it could be partly blind as it kept walking and then abruptly stopping in an erratic way. I wish I could have helped this poor, beautiful creature. But, I didn't have any gloves or container to put it in and I was hiking in the middle of nowhere. It was so heartbreaking to walk away from this little guy.

Thanks Neil. I tend to be very sensitive to any kind of distress in nature, and this is a spotting that I will never forget.
Great spotting, but vert sad. Nature can be very harsh.
Thanks Ava for your comment. I think it might have been a baby :(
