Madagascar Dung Beetle

Scarabaeus viettei

Description:

large, black, about 1",

Habitat:

dry spiny desert

Notes:

I spotted these 2 dung beetles rolling this ball of dung across a road near Toliara in the southwest. It was entertaining to watch them try and maneuver this ball up a small incline on the side of the road. They are also known as rollers or scarab beetles.
