Hera Buckmoth Caterpillar

Hemileuca hera

Description:

Large black caterpillar with tufts of green spines on each segment and two dorsal white lines. White v shaped markings on sides.

Habitat:

Found on the roadside in an open conifer forest.

Notes:

Feeds on sage and buckwheat. Was moving very fast across the ground.

Thanks Ornithoptera. The images for Hemileuca hera that I came across were of younger instars and did not look as much like my photo as an image that I found of electra. I did notice it wasn't listed for Colorado.

Hemileuca electra is not a species recorded in Colorado.
