Commonly known as Salal.
On Vancouver Island, B.C, it is found in coniferous forests, on rocky bluffs, and up to the seashore at low to medium elevations. This is one of the most common understory shrubs in our region.
Its berries were the most important and pleantiful fruit for the aboriginal peoples of the Northwest coast. The Ditidaht chewed the young leaves as a hunger suppressant. Currently salal leaves are picked and sold to florists all over the world to be used as greenery in floral arraingments.
