There is a strategy behind all the noise! The idea is to scare of predators.

Both love leaf litter. But Fox Sparrow can be very noisy at it.

Like you mentioned these are very noisy while foraging in the litter. Almost makes you feel like some large mammal like coyote is around!

I learn as I go. As I find a bird I try to read up on it, look at them at differnet seasons and listen to their songs. I still have some issues like with gulls (never say seagulls) and sparrows. Or hummingbirds other then Anna's. And sometimes I hear them and forget what they were .

Right now they are probably making a loud chatter. I spotted some today being really noisey. Plus they are like Thrushes and Towhees. They make a lot of noise in leaf litter, scratching and digging, sometimes with small groups.
Hermit Thrushes you don't hear them much, maybe a murrr sound. They kinda sneak up on you. One day I was walking down a path and one was right in front of me, keeping pace with me. Someone said it looked like I was taking my bird for a walk.
