I should have noticed that under your Habitat section. In the US, the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail and the Red-spotted Purple lay eggs on Cherry trees, Prunus serotina. I don't know if you have those butterflies in the UK.

thanks for the suggestions. I'll label them as butterfly eggs.
@ceherzog, they were found on the underside of a young cherry tree leaf.
