Orgyia antiqua
A recently hatched caterpillar of the Vapourer moth in the family Lymantriidae.
Native to Europe, mostly in suburban habitats.
The female only has vestigial wings and is flightless while the male flies mostly during the day. Feeds on a wide range of broad leaved trees and shrubs. This one was feeding on a rose bush in my garden - left in peace!
