Drone Fly

Eristalis tenax

Description:

Large fly that mimics the appearance of a European honeybee. Larvae are known as rat-tailed maggots, and live in water containing large amounts of dissolved organic matter. As adults, they are pollinators and therefore beneficial to the environment. Species identifiable by the venation of the wings.

Notes:

I am back from my research cruise! This was quite possibly the last thing I thought I'd see... we were in the middle of the North Sea, and I was sitting outside on a quick break enjoying the sun and taking some photos, when this guy came and sat next to me! We were at least 20 miles from the coast, amazing that he'd made it all the way out there! The closest coast was Germany, so maybe that's where he came from. In the process of sorting out all my other photos to upload!
