Hoary-bellied Himalayan squirrel

Callosciurus pygerythrus

Description:

Spotting 2000. Squirrel with a fat bushy tail. I thought the face was ferret-like.

Habitat:

Dense underbush under the tall trees growing in the valley. Kewzing village. West Sikkim. I was sitting in the verandah when I noticed that a part of a bush almost vertically down was shaking ..then this active little creature sprang out and ran me a merry chase trying to keep up with it as it scurried around.

Notes:

Callosciurus is a genus of squirrels collectively referred to as the "Beautiful squirrels". I am happy that my 2000th spotting is a lifer for me. And perhaps the second time it is being reported on PN.
