That's some sort of asparagus. The USDA lists a couple of species that are introduced in CA. Was this "wild" or was it planted? There's an Indian Ayurvedic medicinal species, A. racemosus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asparagus_r...) which is very similar to your photos, but isn't likely to be found just growing in California.
