Loggerhead Turtle Laying Eggs

Caretta caretta

Description:

It is a marine reptile, belonging to the family Cheloniidae. The loggerhead measures up to 213 centimetres (84 in) long when fully grown. The adult loggerhead sea turtle weighs approximately 135 kilograms (300 lb). The skin ranges from yellow to brown in color, and the shell is typically reddish-brown

Habitat:

Sea journeys for turtles are vast - the turtle lays eggs along the the African coast above St Lucia wetland park and is resident hatching at various beaches world wide - they come back to the beach where they hatched after 17 years at maturity and lay eggs 2- 4 times a year for 3 to 4 years then return to roaming the yea for a time -The loggerhead sea turtle is found in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans as well as the Mediterranean Sea. It spends most of its life in saltwater and estuarine habitats, with females briefly coming ashore to lay eggs

Notes:

My family vacationed at Sodwana bay and was sold the idea of travelling with a 4x4 along the beach at night up to the Mozambique border to look for turtle hatching (it was very isolated) - we travelled back and forth until a radio call from another truck brought us back south to witness the poor creature being examined at the birth time by as many as thirty tourists from various vehicles. I personally felt I was intruding on something that may be should have been private. (No intention of a repeat - I will buy the dvd).

We were there for a week diving and enjoying the beach - we noticed a parade of local people marching along the beach after the turtle night and asked the dive master what it was about and he said he had heard there was a very sick woman there and the locals were getting some eggs to help her? True or false I dont know. People in borneo used the local forest for their servival - who knows?

what an experience to witness...thanks for sharing. I hope people are not harvesting the eggs like some places.
