It is pretty close but it has white markings were this one has black markings on its back and its missing the yellow edge. Your suggestion is in North America, not sure if the same one would be in central Africa. I do appreciate you taking the time to help with ID.
At least you've got it narrowed down. It's a great photo, Dan, and quite a big fellar from the sounds of it! Shield bugs here are only usually 1-1 1/2 cm.

Wow! Gabon for 8 months would be awesome! I hope you were able to get into some of the national parks.

Thanks Dangermouse. I've added a common name and narrowed it down to the family. I don't see any yet that quite match online.
Looks like a type of shield bug?
