Xanthoria elegans

Description:

These eye-catching rosettes paint high-elevation rock in brilliant orange and entice the curious to take a closer look at the myriad of coexisting rock lichens. Xanthoria elegans is a narrowly lobed foliose lichen that grows closely appressed to rock. The upper surface is orange, but the lower surface is white and attached at various points to the rock. Thallus up to 5 cm wide; lobes up to 2 mm wide.

Habitat:

High altitudes. These pictures were taken at the Grand Canyon of Arizona. On Hermits rest trail.
