What a beautiful animal. I believe this is a gray fox. It is out of range to be a kit fox, which are found in the desert southwest.

It looks like a red fox, early spring, with it's winter coat partially shed, but I've never heard of a red fox in California, only the common brown fox. Very curious, and an AMAZING shot of this beautiful animal
