A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Ursus americanus
Length: 6', Height: 3', Weight: 150-500lbs Quoted from Wikipedia: The American black bear (Ursus americanus) is North America's smallest and most common species of bear. Black bears are omnivores, with their diets varying greatly depending on season and location.
Black bears typically live in largely forested areas, but do leave forests in search of food. Sometimes they become attracted to human communities because of the immediate availability of food.
Spotted while hiking at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. Each night our crew of 12 hikers hung our food and other "smellables" in bear bags about 20 feet above the ground between two trees. On the last morning of our trek, we awoke to find that we tied our bear bags too close to one of the trees, and -- perfectly timed -- a bear walked over and scaled the tree in front of our eyes! Luckily, we were able to rescue the food and scare the bear away without incident. Very interesting encounter; makes for a great story!
