A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Chelonoidis carbonaria
This picture was taken the day we found it in the middle of an avenue and, since then, it has been my pet.
All over Brazil and most part of South America
she eats mostly tropical fruits like papaya, mango, guava, avocado etc and leaves like lettuce and "vinagreira". It has necessity for protein, so she eats cat food once a week. The specialists often recommend calcium supplementation, but I have seen some old individuals that are large and healthy without any supplementation. They are very common in the countryside and I'm not sure, but I think there aren't any wild ones in the island. This one was probably abandoned or fled from a house. They can be found in pet shops for sale and are very expensive, but they are very common outside the island living in the wild.
