I'm just shocked at how many squirrels you have to choose from. Out here, we basically have 2. We just choose by color. It sounds like the squirrels are so much more interesting out there!!
@ Sarah, the ears of my spotting being discussed are very small and typical of a fox ear. I compared them to your ground squirrel spotting too. Thanks for your feedback, I will go with Fox Squirrel.
I think this is a very cute fox squirrel. Although the colors are difficult to make out, there is a squirrel on this page from CA with similar markings. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sciurus_nig...
@ misako, thnx, did not know that squirrels could be this complicated! @ Jean I am awaiting your expert response. Douglas is an American Red squirrel. Is this Doug?
Sounds like a good plan, Emma. Somewhere in the back of my brain it seems like I read these were "Asian" types (we have them here in Sonoma County, too. They usually keep to the more populated areas whereas the grey squirrel natives live out in the boonies...). Might give you a place to start looking, though. Good luck! :o)
Hmmm... This looks to me more like one of the the "Asian" variety (what some people call "red" or "fox" squirrels)... Our gray squirrels here in CA are most assuredly "grey" (a smokey, bluish gray) and don't really have the "ticking" apparent on this one's coat (unless it might be a hybrid???).

@Misako and @Jean the closest I came to is Douglas Squirrel.

Turns out that there are at least five species of ground squirrels
at first glance, it looks like a fox squirrel.

@Jean . I agree though that he looks like a hybrid. I have decided to call this spotting UNKNOWN. Calls for more research.!
