Lantana montevidensis
Invasive vine/plant with black berries and pink cluster flowers with white and yellow centers. New flower clusters blossom starting on the outside as shown in the first image.
All over our backyard. Is taking over Yucca, Bougainvillea and English Boxwood
Since it's such a fast growing and dense plant, we've cut back the plants in parts of the back yard to make a hedge. AKA trailing lantana, weeping lantana, small lantana, purple lantana or trailing shrubverbena
That may be what's going on here RamonPinyolSalvado. dandoucette, I crushed the leaves and they did have a citrus-like smell but I wouldn't describe it as strong. It could be that I'm just not sensitive to that particular smell :) Thank you both for all your help!
Cindy as to your question about the "small strongly scented flowering shrub" description, Lantanas don't often smell as you pass by them nor does the flower smell that much. What I've found, in at least L. camara, is that the leaves have a strong citrus smell when crushed. Try that with the leaves and see if you get anything.
in some species there may be morphological changes depending on environmental conditions, sorry I couldn't say more!
Hmmm, doesn't look like my spotting. Guess I'll settle for Lantana montevidensis despite the differences in the description. Thank you for the list of varieties RamonPinyolSalvado
there are varieties
Lantana montevidensis 'Boston Gold'
Lantana montevidensis 'Malans Gold'
Lantana montevidensis 'White Lightning'
Lantana montevidensis 'Whiteknights'
Lantana montevidensis alba
Thank you both very much for your help. The only thing that throws me off with this species is the "small strongly scented flowering shrub" description. This gets very large and doesn't really have a scent. I wonder if there's a subspecies of this.
