Sorry for the delay in responding to your suggestion (for which I thank you). I checked out several local sites, including the original, where my moss is found. Hair cap moss is very similar in appearance except that it is described as being quite tall (the shorter varieties being 2-4 inches high). None of the starry mosses I observed exceeded 3/4 of an inch in height.

I don't think that is sphagnum moss. We have it around here too (NC mountains) but I haven't ID'd it yet.
