Hickory Tree Ring-barked by Sapsucker - bird

Carya glabra

Description:

Hiked through by neighbours forested hillside with him and he pointed out this tree which he assured me was the work of a Sapsucker bird. There is reference to them drilling into maples but he insists this is a Hickory? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hickory

Habitat:

Hillside forest in a Kope shale formation (under a limestone layer). An old previous 1930's winery that was closed by the Feds during proibition.

Notes:

Would be interested in any others experiences of this and will attempt to get shots of this bird on the job!

Definitely not a maple--look at the bark. Maples generally have smooth or flaky bark, and this tree's bark looks like a fishing net. I have seen hickories that have this kind of bark, but not sure what exact type.

Many pines in my neighborhood have this kind of ring around the trunk--didn't know it was caused by sapsuckers. Interesting!

Now P.Young713 your question would be is it a Hickory? There were nuts actually lying around nearby - but I am fairly green to this area of interest and am enlarging my knowledge by questioning everything, Thanks.
