Garden snail

Helix aspersa

Description:

What kind of snail is this? I was shocked to find this chap next to my front door - the biggest I have ever seen. The shell was about 5cm long and he was about 10cm long when in full stride.

Thanks for the suggestions, but after having a look around I am pretty sure it Helix aspersa, aka, a garden snail. I've never seen one so far north.
