Whitetail Deer

Odocoileus virginianus

Description:

Common deer found in the mid-west and other parts of the country. Dark brown/tan upper body and white lower body. Upper body takes on a reddish tint as the deer loose their dark guard hairs until late summer to early fall. The large white tail is also an important field mark which serves to warn other near by deer of danger.

Habitat:

Woodland edges and open areas with some cover. Whitetail deer are edge animals that often inhabit the edge of the woodlands and adjacent open areas.

Notes:

For the most part Whitetail deer herds are prospering throughout the country.
