found on the bank of a river hiking in NH, was about the size of a child's open hand and had large fangs...i do not know what kind it is or if it was poisonous or not...

It looks like a fishing spider (genus Dolomedes - http://bugguide.net/node/view/1985). Take a look at the different species on that page.
