A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Coccinella septempunctata
A very distinctive insect with a bright red shell that has (of course) seven black spots on it. Thorax and head are black, with white spots. They feed on aphids and are a welcome sight for gardeners. There is growing concern that the invasive harlequin ladybug is outcompeting it in the UK.
Can pretty much live anywhere there are aphids!
Spotted this guy enjoying the sun on an oak leaf while walking around the Anglo-Saxon burial site at Sutton Hoo, Suffolk.
