Greg, they are simple eyes called ocelli with a main function of distinguishing light from dark. Incidentally the correct common name is Praying mantis, named for the pose they often adopt which looks like they are praying!
Can anyone tell me what the three bumps in a triangle pointing down to the face are called and if they have a function? I noticed they are also on several other types of bugs like cicada and carpenter bees also.
