Plantain Squirell

Callosciurus notatus

Description:

These agile squirrels are a beautiful greyish brown, with a chestnut belly and a black-and-white line between the two. In fact, their genus name Callosciurus means Beautiful Squirrels and the genus includes some of the most colourful mammals.

Habitat:

They rest in hollow trees and some construct a nest out of leaves and twigs, in tree branches or large bushes. Plantain Squirrels disperse plants by eating their fruits. But they are considered a pest by fruit farmers and coconut plantation owners.

Notes:

Found this guy in a park, he was unaware of how close I actually was to him, hence the very close picture. He was distracted by the plant he was eating on.

Wow I just found out that there are 6 other species of squirrels in Singapore including two species of flying squirells. I must not be looking hard enough! :(

I think these are the only Squirells that are found here in Singapore. I have not managed to find any other species so far. These guys are quite shy compared to other species and spent half there time in the forest.

A little bigger. According to wiki their body length is 9.1 to 12 in, the tail from 7.5 to 9.8 in.

Hey Karen, The length of these squirrels is between 13 and 27 cm (5.1 and 11 inches), not including the 13 to 27 cm (5.1 to 11 in) long tail! How big are the American Grays?

I find squirrels very entertaining to watch, even when they are emptying my 'squirrel-proof' feeders! How do these compare size-wise with the American grays?
