It was growing right in the city itself, but I don't know if it was planted or if it just grew there.

Actually it's a tree. There's a very similar one with green flowers.

Beautiful. It's in Fabaceae, the pea family. Is it a vine or a shrub?

May be Helliconia, but it would be helpful if you had the name up where you found it.
