Sand Dollar

Peronella lesueuri

Description:

a coin shaped shell with a flower pattern on the surface. the other side of this was a pin-sized hole. I found a lot of these along the shore and some of them had the other side cracked open. I suppose this is a shell of some sort of mullusk? or just a coral?

Notes:

I find these really pretty that I was tempted to collect them. I just threw them back on the sand. I just felt they should just stay there.

I think the skeleton matches more on this species Peronella lesueuri.

Wow! Interesting! Thanks.. How come the sand dollars that were washed up on that shore are double-sided with at least an inch hollow inside? the ones I found mostly online (just now) are flat. Mine must be a different species eh?
