Order Myliobatiformes
A fossil ray crushing tooth plate collected at an undisclosed location along the Potomac River, Westmoreland County, Virginia USA. "Rays have modified teeth that form flat crushing plates. These crushing plates are adapted for eating mollusks and crustaceans on the sea floor. They suck their prey up like a vacuum and simply crush them between their upper and lower crushing plates. Most Ray fossils found are tiny fragments of these crushing plates. These fragments can sometimes be difficult to identify to a genus level."
