Belding
I saw this spotting in the Heather farm wild life reserve. I was taking a walk by the pond and i saw it peeking out from a hole in the ground. It made a few attempts to come out but fell right in. Looks like a baby squirrel trying to crawl out of the hole!
Feedback from Bay area, Bay Nature Institute I'm by no means a squirrel expert, Hema, but noting the alert posture, it might very well be the California Ground Squirrel's smaller cousin the Belding, which may be found in Sierra burrows and pricks its ears for signs of trouble. So even non-Bay Area squirrels know about the impending end of our Holiday Special! Happy New Yea

Donna it was more cuter than it looks here. My pic does not do justice to it's looks!!
It seems like an otter...
I don't know what this is, but it sure has a face only its mother can love.
I had a similar spotting a few weeks ago of a baby squirrel trying to come out of its home in the ground and the failed attempts. The first spotting was of a baby Belding squirrel. This one seems to be a California Ground Squirrel ,(Otospermophilus beecheyi), The white ring around the eye is a very distinctive feature.
