Redbelly Snake

Storeria occipitomaculata

Description:

This tiny, nonvenomous snake, also known as the red-bellied snake, is Minnesota's smallest snake. It is gray with lengthwise stripes on top and a red belly below. It is about 8 inches.

Habitat:

It was spotted along the Otter Tail River on North River Road on Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge.

Notes:

It eats insects, earthworms, and slugs. Predators are birds of prey, skunks, and other snakes.
