Horned Viper

Vipera Ammodytes Meridionalis

Description:

About 35cm long, this young female was found in our garden about 10 meters away from the kitchen door!! Corfu is very rich in snakes, and this one is the only venomous one. But very shy, it will only attack if seriously provoked which is why snake bite cases are pretty rare. I managed to catch it and relocated it to a forest area further away. But I kept it at home for a couple of days, for a few close up photos... Lovely creature, so menacing to look at...

Habitat:

They live mostly where there are rocks, our garden is a normal Corfiot garden, quite damp, but with a couple of mounds of rocks that we have dug up over the years. This is where we found it. They love to sit on a rock in the sun!!
