Dawn Redwood

Metasequoia sp.

Description:

The property owner called this evergreen tree a "Metasequoia." I Googled "Metasequoia": the resulting images don't match this specimen very closely; I defer to Lars Korb's expertise. Editor's Note: Photo 4 of 4 was taken using "Leafsnap" app. "Leafsnap" failed to ID the leaf sample shown in the photo. In my experience, "Leafsnap" works ~8 out of 10 times.

Habitat:

Landscape planting in the community of Hollin Hills, Fairfax County, Virginia USA.

Thanks for you comment, "wjarsky!" I'm inclined to agree with wjarsky. What do you think, Lars?

Friends,
I'm pretty sure this is a picture of a Cryptomeria Japonica, japanese cryptomeria.

It's a Sequoioideae, subfamily in the Cupressaceae family, commonly called Redwood.
