Golden Rain Tree

Koelreuteria paniculata

Description:

Spotted in the same yard as the northern catalpa from today, this is the golden rain tree. Also known as the Pride of India and the lantern tree due to its paper lantern esque seed pods that hold black berries. There is some overlap and mix up with the bladdernut tree which has similar seed pods but note the leaves. Bladdernuts have rounded edge leaves while the golden train tree has serrated leaves.

Habitat:

Native to Asia but was introduced to Europe and later the Americas. Very popular as an ornamental tree.
