Southern Black Widow Spider

Latrodectus mactans

Description:

The red hourglass marking on this female spider's abdomen is unmistakable. With all eight legs spread, the spider measured approximately 1.5" across. Tightened-up into a ball, the spider was less than 0.25" at its widest point. It quickly spun a makeshift web in the jar and preferred hanging just off the bottom of the glass.

Notes:

Found entering a house on the kitchen floor, near the sink.
