Mantis lacewing (mantis fly)

Campion impressus

Description:

A mantis lacewing with huge grasping forelegs looking somewhat like a duck!!?

Habitat:

Perched on a Pittosporum tree, awaiting a defenseless insect to pass by.

Notes:

I have spotted a larger species on Christmas day, also on Phillip Island. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/819... On close inspection I consider these to be the same species.

Many butterflies, including all the nymphalidae family use four legs for walking and two (making the nose) for feeding nectar. http://www.flickr.com/photos/moustiques/...

and to see an insect standing around on four legs is weird too

Yes it just needs a blue sailor suit. I was impressed by how ducky it looks. It does look like my other spotting and I've decided to name it the same (Campion impressus) even though it is a bit smaller.
