Ursus arctos horribilis
These large aggressive bears can range in color from blonde to very dark brown. Many have the grizzled (white-tipped) hair for which this bear gets its name. Their massively muscled shoulders form a hump on their backs. Their ears are rounded and well furred.
These bears have a wide range of possible habitats. They were once found in mountains, prairies, coastal scrublands, and forests, but their numbers were greatly reduced as white settlers moved into those areas. Today, in the US west they survive in small populations in national parks and forests. As their numbers rebound, however, they are expanding their range back into foothills and prairie areas.
This bear was hanging around the same area that I photographed another grizzly earlier in the day and is likely the same bear. I posted that other photo earlier.
