Buteo lagopus
Common in Gunnison Basin during winter. Often seen perched in tree tops or utility poles within grasslands (especially hay meadows) or sagebrush vegetation types.
Observed in Ohio Creek valley north of Gunnison, CO. As we watched, it flew off from its lower perch in the cottonwood, seemingly disturbed, but then flew back right away and perched near the top of the tree.

Wonderful! The more the better...I would like to expand the mission to the whole US but it needs a certain level of participation...so encourage others please! Thanks!!!
Thanks! I have joined your mission and will add more raptor photos.
Sweet shot!! Roughies aren't seen here very often!! There is a mission for Birds of Prey of Colorado...we'd love your pictures to be part of it! http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8627...
