I should have looked further by opening the 'split' one. It doesn't seem to have been broken or bitten, and it had some dark looking goo inside.
Thanks for the comment martin - I'll keep searching and something might come to light.

I can only guess. They look like rows of egg insertions. I do not know. Many of these spottings remain mysterious and then sometimes fall into a category.
